What is Affiliate Marketing?
The simplest way to explain affiliate marketing is that it is a way of making money online whereby you as a publisher are rewarded for helping a business by promoting their product, service or site.

There are a number of forms of these types of promotions but in most cases they involve you as a publisher earning a commission when someone follows a link on your blog( or site) to another site where they then buy something.

Other variations on this are where you earn an amount for referring a visitor who takes some kind of action – for example when they sign up for something and give an email address, where they complete a survey, where they leave a name and address etc.

There are three ways to earn money through affiliate marketing:
Pay Per Click — Every time a potential customer leaves the affiliate website by "clicking" on the link leading to the merchant's website, a certain amount of money is deposited in the affiliate's account. This amount can be pennies or dollars depending on the product and amount of the commission.
Pay Per Sale — Every time a sale is made as a result of advertising on the affiliate's website, a percentage, or commission, is deposited into the affiliate's account.
Pay Per Lead — Every time a potential client registers at the merchant's website as a result of the advertisement on the affiliate's account, a previously determined amount is deposited into the affiliate's account.

Why Affiliate Marketing Can Work Well on Blogs
Affiliate marketing isn't the only way to make money from blogs and it won't suit every blog/blogger (more on this below) but there are a few reasons why it can be profitable in our medium. Perhaps the biggest of these reasons is that affiliate marketing seems to work best when there's a relationship with trust between the publisher and their readership.

I've found that as this trust deepens that readers are more likely to follow the recommendations that a blogger makes.

Of course this can also be a negative with affiliate marketing – promote the wrong product and trust can be broken (more on this below).

Is affiliate marketing easy to do?
While affiliate marketing can be incredibly lucrative it is important to know that affiliate marketing is not easy money. Most people who try it make very little as it relies upon numerous factors including:

traffic (high traffic helps a lot)
finding relevant products
finding quality products
building trust with your readers
having a readership who is in a 'buying mood'
you being able to write good sales copy (and more)
There's also some risk associated with affiliate marketing in that if you push too hard or promote products of a low quality you can actually burn readers and hurt your reputation and brand.

It's also worth noting that affiliate marketing doesn't work on all blogs. Some blogs are on topics where it is hard to find products to promote – other blogs attract audiences who are not in a buying frame of mind and for other blogs it just doesn't fit with the blogger's style or approach.

How to find affiliate products to promote.
Choosing the right products to promote is crucial for a number of reasons – the two main ones being:
1. Relevant products have a better conversion.
2. Promote high quality products can Impact Your Long Term Brand

So – choosing the right affiliate product is the most important thing.

A few tips about how to find the right affiliate product to promote:
Know your niche - You need to know which industry segment you are interested in. This will enable you to promote these products better. Assess your own hobbies and interests and then find suitable products which relate to this segment. Find out which things you like doing in your spare time and then take up these segments as areas to find the right product or products.

Google Research – this one isn't rocket science but it does work. If you have a Beauty Product blog google "Beauty Products Affiliate Program". Insert your main keywords into that search and you may just find products that are relevant to your niche.
Look at Your Competition – what products are other people promoting in your niche.
Check out AdSense Ads – many of the AdSense ads appearing besides Google search results, on other blogs and even on your own blog are likely to be products with affiliate programs attached. Don't click the ads on your own blog but checking out what the ads promote can reveal all kinds of potential affiliate partners. The same thing is true with other types of advertising. For example I was recently surfing on Facebook and saw an ad relevant for my blog – on clicking it I found a new product with an affiliate program that I'd not heard of before.
Approach Potential Affiliate Partners – this one might not work if you're a new blog with small traffic but as your blog grows you might find yourself in a position to approach the makers of a product or service to see if they'd start some kind of affiliate program for you. I've done this a couple of times over the last year and it has been great. The best part of it is that you get a head start on your competition for the promotion as you're likely to be the only person promoting it.
Search Affiliate networks – lastly there are quite a few affiliate networks around that list many affiliate programs. Most of these have search functions to allow you to type in keywords and find promotions relevant to your niche. Check out MarketLeverage, Clickbank, Commission Junction and many more.
Search Online Stores for Products – many online stores like Amazon have affiliate programs attached to them. In general the comissions are not massive (for example Amazon's range from as low as 4% up to 15% depending upon the type of product and how much you sell) – I guess they have narrower profit margins) – but stores like this have a massive range of products and can be a good place to start while you build traffic and find other programs.

What is an Affiliate Network?
You could try to go and find each individual website you want to promote, try to setup a deal with them and then become their affiliate but that would take a lot of time.

This is where the affiliate networks come in.

Affiliate networks are companies that facilitate the "network" or relationship between the companies and the affiliates (you). Affiliates (Industry term: Publishers) sign up for the affiliate network and instantly have access to thousands of companies (Industry term: Advertisers) that want you (affiliates) to promote their business. You can pick through any number of these companies to promote.

Another benefits is you never deal with the individual companies directly. Instead, you always deal directly with the affiliate network. This way you really only have one point of contact. Affiliate networks usually pay their affiliates way faster than a direct company.

How to get Accepted Into An Affiliate Network
It can be a bit difficult to get accepted into an affiliate network (specially for people outside the US) when first starting out. It might seem like a tough process but if you follow the steps below, you should have no problem.

This tough process is due to affiliate networks taking on a ton of risk. In most cases they have to pay bigger affiliates weekly (sometimes even daily) but yet only get paid from the companies net 15 or even net 30! In some cases the companies are late or even fight payment. If a certain percentage of leads for example are not good, then they often don't want to pay for the whole batch of leads.

At first you should think about yourselft, to affiliate networks it's all about one thing. How much of a risk are you to them?

And then, if you apply for any affiliate network, you must not sit and wait there for
approval but you should call them. If you get denied, call them and ask why. Tell them how you plan to promote their affiliate offers. This step will offen decrease most worries of affiliate network.

After last, remember, don't get scammed! Some new affiliate networks are cheater, do not try to go for just any affiliate network. You don't want to risk not getting paid.

Whatever you decide to do I wish you the best and look forward to helping you anyway I can in the future!

Some good affiliate networks
Let's take a quick look at several good sources for affiliate products, and ways to find others.
Commission Junction – One of the more venerable affiliate networks, CJ has been around a long time and has a load of good products to promote in a number of markets and niches, each with a lot of affiliate resources such as banners and other creatives, as well as instructions on keywords that you can and can't use in your campaigns. The focus here is almost exclusively on physical products, and as such, the commissions are generally in the 4-10% range. This may not seem like a lot, but it can add up, and you may find less competition for your efforts.
Amazon - You can sell nearly anything from Amazon as an affiliate — that's the good news. The  bad news is that payouts are extremely low. You need to rack up a lot of sales to create anything meaningful. This one is generally used as a filler offer; they have great tools to make ad boxes and product offers.
ClickBank - The premiere digital download affiliate network. They have thousands of digital products you can promote, and they make it very easy to get links and promo material. Commissions are higher in digitally downloadable products, usually in the 40-75% range. You can make a lot of money here, if you can generate traffic to your offers.
OfferVault - A blend of physical an digital offers, this one also has a vast selection of CPA offers. This is good as it eliminates the need to get approved by the various CPA networks, which can be problematical at times. There are more than 20,000 products here!
There are many other good affiliate networks out there, including PayDotCom, LinksShare, MaxBounty, Hydra, Google, and others. All are free to join, and most  pay promptly.  Take some time to browse the offerings and see which products you would feel comfortable promoting, and then get to it!
